In May 2016, our Department initiated its first joint project in Ukraine, focusing on the systematic archaeological excavation of a medieval ruin church located on the outskirts of Nagymuzsaly in Transcarpathia. This project, led by the National University of Uzhhorod, is carried out under a cooperation agreement with the Department of Archaeology of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Technology of the Republic of Transcarpathia. The work is supported and funded by the László Teleki Foundation.
The primary goal of the excavation is to lay the groundwork for the restoration of the church ruins, which contain significant remains. This includes clarifying the layout of the interior and exterior walkways, identifying the destroyed sections of the building, and locating burial sites within the area. The excavation also aims to recover and analyse stone carvings, which will play a crucial role in the theoretical reconstruction of the church and in the development of a restoration plan. Ultimately, the project seeks to establish the site as a historic monument. We intend to continue our active involvement in the research and preservation of church monuments and archaeological heritage beyond our borders.
